Skid Steers Certification Practice Test

How should you approach a slope to prevent tipping?

Face uphill or downhill, maintain low speed, keep load low and close to the machine, avoid traveling across slopes.

Stability on slopes comes from keeping the machine’s center of gravity low and aligned with the slope by controlling direction, speed, and load position. Facing the slope so you travel straight uphill or downhill uses gravity to your advantage and dramatically reduces the risk of tipping compared to moving across the slope. Keeping speed low gives you time to react and limits the forces that can cause a rollover. Keeping the load low and close to the machine tones down the tipping moment by keeping the center of gravity near the wheelbase. Avoid traveling across slopes or making quick turns on a slope, as those actions create lateral forces and sudden shifts in balance. Keeping the bucket or load low throughout the movement further minimizes tipping risk.

Face across the slope, move quickly to cross.

Turn the skid steer while on the slope to change direction rapidly.

Keep the bucket raised high while crossing.
